Start wherever you are

Where have you got to?

Start wherever you are. You don't need to go back and repeat work that's already been properly done.

You may have an idea but no plan yet. We can help you think through what's involved, what information you'll need and what to do first — before anyone is asked for a price.

Getting the right information together before you ask for prices makes quotations easier to compare and reduces surprises later. We can help you see what's missing.

Quotes often look very different from each other. We can help you understand what each one actually includes, what it leaves out and what to ask before you choose.

Before work starts is a good time to agree how things will run — what's being done, how payments work, timings and how you'll live at home meanwhile.

Builder Quotation Review

£295

Got a builder's quotation?

Understand what you're being offered before you say yes.

The review covers one principal builder's quotation, together with the supporting project information agreed with BCA before the review starts. It helps you understand:

  • What appears to be included
  • What is expressly excluded or not apparent
  • What is unclear
  • Allowances, provisional sums and possible cost-change points
  • How the quotation relates to the agreed supporting information
  • Useful questions to ask before committing

The lowest price isn't always the lowest cost.

If things aren't going to plan

Something gone wrong?

Building work doesn't always go the way anyone expected. You don't need to work out what kind of problem it is first. It's often hard to know whether something is normal, a misunderstanding, or worth raising. A calm, independent look at what's happening can help everyone move forward.

  • Being asked for extra money
  • Payment requests you're unsure about
  • Delays
  • Concerns about the work
  • Work has stopped
  • Unhappy now they say it's finished

We don't start from the idea that anyone is at fault. We'll look at what's happening and explain what we'd do next. If BCA isn't the right place to deal with a particular issue, we'll explain the appropriate next step.

Living through the work

It's still your home.

Part of your home may become a building site for a while — but you still have to live there.

“Good planning isn't only about the building work. It's also about how you live while it's happening.”

Completion & handover

Think about the end before you start.

When the work is done you should be left with more than a finished room. Knowing what to expect at handover makes it easier to agree it at the start.
